Definitions

For the purposes of ACIHE and ACIHE Accreditation, the following definitions are in use:

International Healthcare



International healthcare is the field devoted to the improvement for health of people living in all communities of all nations. In particular, international healthcare is devoted to serve those people who are most disadvantaged – commonly due to cultural differences, language barriers, inadequate education, geographic isolation, and insufficient financial resources.

International healthcare is a field that relies upon the interplay of several associated disciplines for its effectiveness, including sociology, psychology, public health, epidemiology, nursing, medicine, dentistry, pharmacology, animal health, agriculture, economics, and political science.


International Healthcare Education


International healthcare education is the field devoted to formal training of healthcare professionals and healthcare profession students so that they are better capable of improving health of people living in all communities of all nations – especially those people who are most disadvantaged. Such healthcare professionals and students include those in the fields of medicine, nursing, advance practice nursing, physician assistant, therapy, dentistry, and public health.
